Sleeping in Contact Lenses?!

Do you sleep with your lenses on ?  You should NOT . But if it happens Don’t panic !  Yes it is not good. And Yes most of us know we should not sleep with our contact lenses on, however its just like one of those things we know we should not do, yet it sometimes happens. Here is why it is Bad to sleep with lenses on?

The cornea which is the transparent membrane covering the eye gets oxygen form the air. With contact lenses on less oxygen reaches the eyes and With eyes closed even less oxygen reaches the eyes.

In simple terms the result is that the cornea swells up allowing bacteria to penetrate. Your eyes will feel very uncomfortable if you have slept with your lenses.

So Here are some tips on how to remove your lenses if you have fallen asleep with them:

  1. Wash your hands and dry them well
  2. Do not rub your eyes. Rubbing dry contacts will scratch your eye.
  3. Flood the eye with rewetting drops or saline. It may take several applications of lubricant to moisten your lenses again. Be patient and wait for them to moisten before you try and remove them.
  4. If you cannot locate your contact lens. Common spots are the corners of the eye or under the upper eyelid.
  5. Once you have gotten your lenses out give your eyes a break. They need it. Abstain from wearing your lenses for a day or so.
  6. Do visit your eye care professional if your eyes don’t feel right.
